Golden Facts
Golden Retrievers are: friendly, reliable and trustworthy. Because they love people and need lots of love and attention, they are most happy as an inside dog. Because they are extremely intelligent, they will do well with some obedience training.
Goldens Retrievers are: active dogs and need 20-30 minutes of exercise daily. This could be a nice long walk, or fetching tennis balls in the backyard. Females can range anywhere from 55-65 pounds. Males can be 65-75 pounds. They have a long coat that sheds year round and “blow their coat” in the Spring and Fall. Brushing will help with this, but you should know that your house will still be full of “goldie locks”.
Golden Retrievers are: known for carrying things in their mouth (after all, they are a retriever!). We can provide you with a list of appropriate “chew toys”.
Golden Retrievers are: NOT a good watch dog. In fact, he’ll probably invite the burglar in for a bone or treat. They are best as a family pet – not for protection.
Golden Retrievers are: Great family dogs – but not without work. They do calm down and can be very well mannered (like the ones you see on TV) but not without some basic obedience training. If you don’t have a trainer, please contact us and we will recommend some for you.
Golden Retrievers are: Great with kids – but young, active, second hand dogs don’t often go well with infants and toddlers. Goldens can knock over children unless they are supervised and trained.
Golden Retrievers are: NOT made to be left in the yard alone. They need constant human companionship. If left alone, they get bored. This leads to destructive behavior – even escapes. All because they need to be with people!
