Foster Homes Needed!
Please consider fostering a homeless Golden Retriever!
It is ideal that each of our available Goldens has the opportunity to be placed into foster care before they are permanently adopted. Experience has shown us that those Goldens who have been fostered and taught how to live in a home, are more likely to be adopted. Unfortunately, with the number of Goldens we have in the program and the shortage of foster and permanent homes, most are kept in various boarding kennels.
To foster one of our Goldens, you must go through the same process as someone who is adopting. The process starts with completing an in-depth application followed by a home visit. The home visit consists of an SGRR volunteer coming to your home to continue the interview and to answer any questions you may have. We bring one of our dogs with us to give you an idea of what it’s like to have a Golden in your home. After the home visit is complete, and if the SGRR volunteer recommends this to be a good home for one of our Goldens, we allow you to choose the Golden you would like to foster.
The foster home provider does not pay a fee for the Golden. We do ask that you provide attention, love and food. SGRR provides yearly vaccinations, heartworm preventative and any other healthcare necessary. Should any health problems occur while in your care, we ask that you contact us so we can make arrangements for the Golden to be seen by one of our veterinarians.
The duties of the foster provider range from providing food and shelter, to house training and obedience training. It is our goal to find the best homes possible for each one of our Goldens. Since most of our Goldens have been nothing more than yard dogs, they have little to no manners. Allowing them to learn how to behave in the house and around people is the benefit of foster care. At the same time, the foster provider can give the prospective adoptive family insight on the habits of the Golden.
As a foster provider, it is rewarding to know you’ve helped prepare a homeless Golden to be ready for his forever home. At same time, if you are not familiar with the breed, it gives you the opportunity to have hands on experience with a Golden. We always allow our foster provider first right to adopt their foster dog.
